Any recommendations on purchasing a belt sander?

The most common sizes are 3x21 and 4x21. As far as whether to go with one of
these sizes or larger or smaller really depends on what type of work you will
be doing and how comfortable you will be with the feel of the sander. I prefer
to use one with a dust bag. While the bag will not catch all of the dust, it
will decrease the amount of dust in the air which will ultimately make cleanup
easier.
As for brands I would recommend PorterCable.
You might want to also go to Deja.com and do a power search on belt sanders.
After you click on the powersearch link enter "rec.woodworking" in the forum
box. This should return a good list of pros/cons and compliments/complaints on
the different options.
For more reviews of belt sanders and other tools goto woodworking.org and
search their tool reviews.

NOT Skil! Took them 6 MONTHS to send a switch.
Name works for E-mail

I agree, not Skil. I bought a Skil, used it for 10 minutes, and found
that the adjustment to keep the belt aligned didn't have the range
required to actually keep the belt from walking off the sander. I
returned it and bought a Porter Cable. No comparison, the PC is by
far and away a better product.

Depends on how much you will be using it. If you have lots of money
or will be using it a lot then you will want to spend the money and go
with one of the profesional brands such as Porter Cable, Millwaukie,
Dewalt, etc. If you will only use it five or six times a year, it's
hard to beat Craftsman for a functional, cheap tool. I think got my 3"
Craftsman for just under sixty dollars and ten years later it is still
hanging in there. When my wife ran over it last summer I was overjoyed
that I could finaly buy a new one but unfortunatly it still works.

Several reviews and opinions by actual owners/users of several brands and
models (as well as other power tools).
