Unfortunately, his emotional performance fails to have the desired effect and the judge's verdict leaves him crushed. Back in the village, Ethan proudly tells Laurel that Niamh saves lives on a daily basis, making her feel inadequate in comparison, while Steph and Eric discuss how much profit they stand to make by keeping wages at rock bottom — unaware the staff can hear every word over the office intercom.

Jack angrily dismisses Debbie's concerns about his relationship with Rachel, but she refuses to take a hint and arranges a set-up to catch her out.

Halfway through their Fifties-style National Service, bolshy recruit Alan Brown decides he's had enough and flees. By contrast, most of the others are in high spirits as the disciplined atmosphere begins to have a positive effect on their attitudes — and they decide to celebrate by stealing their superior officer's gnome. However, the joshing is soon replaced by a more appropriate solemnity at the D-Day Remembrance Service. Narrated by Dennis Waterman.

The art historian previews a clay exhibition at Tate Liverpool including little-known works by Gauguin, Picasso, Miro and Chagall. The output of contemporary artists is reflected in Antony Gormley's installation Field, which features 35,000 individual figures, as well as pieces by Roger Hiorns, Rebecca Warren, Edmund de Waal and Grayson Perry.

Retrospective celebrating the 50th anniversary of BBC TV news reports, looking back at some of the pivotal moments of the past five decades and the broadcasters who brought them to the nation. In the opening episode, Michael Buerk and Charles Wheeler remember the events between 1954 and 1973, a period that saw America rocked by the assassination of President Kennedy, the war in Vietnam, clashes over civil rights and the Watergate scandal. The Beatles dominated the charts worldwide, the birth of the Pill changed society for ever, mods fought with rockers, and Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon.

A doctor turns matchmaker to bring together 47-year-old Mohammad and 21-year-old widow Miryam who is desperate for a husband and, like Mohammad, is HIV positive. Their journey reveals a largely hidden side of Iran, a country with the highest proportion of drug users anywhere in the world, where strict religious attitudes are being shaken by an impending Aids crisis.
4.00am Sign Zone: Combat Pilot
The pilots struggle to complete the first stage of their training for 208 Squadron, six months of continuous, strenuous testing, which soon takes its toll on the recruits. The ultimate challenge of this part of the course is high-speed low-altitude flying over the Welsh valleys in difficult weather conditions.
4.30am Sign Zone: World Weddings
The story of how South African gay couple Mark and Cengey decided to take matters into their own hands and arrange an unofficial marriage, sanctioned by a gay-friendly church. They hope the event will be part of a growing movement to achieve equality for homosexuals in their country, as there is still no official recognition of this act of union despite the post-apartheid constitution banning sexual discrimination.

Both sides look certain to be involved in the end-of-season play-offs, and could even come up against each other during them, so gaining a psychological advantage could prove crucial for the future.
