Frankly boring adventure, with Val Kilmer taking the lead as the cult Sixties hero but it's a role he's simply not cut out for. Elisabeth Shue and Henry Goodman co-star.

Beginning with his early years as an eager-to-impress, patriotic Marine Corps recruit, it shows his terrifying experiences of the conflict and his eventual return from South-East Asia as a disillusioned anti-war activist, paralysed from the chest down and facing a harrowing journey of physical and mental recovery. Tom Cruise gives one of his best performances in the lead, while Willem Dafoe, Kyra Sedgwick and Josh Evans are among the supporting cast.

It may sound like the former Bill actor has the easiest task of all, but there's a twist he has to complete the moves while wing-walking at 500ft.
